12/21/2023 0 Comments Eye candy mandyA few darker songs were followed Moore playing guitar on the cheesy, "Can't You Just Adore Her?" which she apparently wrote because she loves the word "adore." She does have a quiet sex appeal - maybe the reason there were so many older men lurking by the bar.Īfter stopping to sign an autograph, Moore sang several songs that sounded similar, including "Extraordinary," the first single from her new album (sample lyric: "And now I'm ready to be extraordinary"). Moore claims not to have "sexy music," but if she did, this song would be it. During the first two songs of her set, Moore rocked out with her band however, her attempt at being a gritty, tough rocker chick just made her look awkward.Īlthough most of Moore's ballads sounded alike, songs that stood out included "Looking Forward to Looking Back," and a sultry rendition of "Wild Hope," on which the whole band grooved. On Saturday, however, Moore sang songs from her new record, Wild Hope>, which she wrote herself. Moore has also appeared in several films, including "The Princess Diaries," "Saved!," "License to Wed" and "A Walk to Remember," for which she recorded several songs. Though this is Moore's "first proper tour," Wild Hope is her fifth album. She raved about Madison and asked the crowd, "How about those Badgers?!" generating a loud and positive response. During her set, her shyness seemed to dissolve into utter amazement that she was actually singing songs she wrote in front of people who actually liked them - at least a little. However, no one seemed more embarassed than Moore when she first appeared onstage to sing with Chris Stills her hair hung in her face and she did not make eye contact the entire time. The crowd was comprised mostly of 20- and 30-somethings on dates and girls who seemed both excited and embarassed to be there. Many songs sounded alike, but the addition of actual instruments is a definite improvement from her teen-pop days. Moore appeared in a conservative black dress and sang most of the songs from her new album, Wild Hope, sweetly enduring shouts of "Mandy! Play ‘Candy!'" between each number. Two acoustic opening acts, Chris Stills and Ben Lee, set the stage and prepared the crowd for the new Mandy (though their use of language and questionable song content was rather innappropriate for the 10-year-olds in the front row). On Saturday night at the grand opening of the revamped Majestic Theatre, Mandy Moore played songs that she wrote herself and attempted to prove that she has matured as an artist. Now, we are supposed to forget that ‘Candy' ever happened and take Mandy seriously as a singer-songwriter. We know Mandy Moore as the sweet pop-princess whose catchy but forgettable singles just did not cut it against the likes of scandalous and scantily-clad Britney and Christina. 12/21/2023 0 Comments Nasty zipsterBecause our children need to respect authority figures, because learning to subject ourselves to a “higher authority” is an essential part of character development. We don’t want to set a precedent of permissible talking back to parents or teachers or any other authority figures. What is adorable and oh-so-clever in a three year-old is rude and obnoxious a few years later. This has nothing to do with my honor – or yours – but with our children’s character. I feel strongly that there should be a zero tolerance policy for chutzpah. While hormones will be hormones and there is nothing you nor I nor anyone else can do to stop it, I do believe there is action that you can and should take immediately. Is there anything you think I should do now to ward off a really awful adolescence? I don’t want to dampen her spirit and she makes me laugh but I get nervous when I think of her as a teenager. She knows how to smile and get away with things and sometimes her “cute” behavior borders on chutzpah. She is very aware of her own abilities and charms and can be a little manipulative. She is also very pretty and even a little coquettish. It is actually a lot of fun to talk to her. She understands everything and has a large vocabulary. My three-year-old daughter is very precocious. The ball will now be in her court.Įmuna Precocious, Manipulative 3-Year-Old Even if she doesn’t, you have taken a stand and preserved your dignity and still left open the option of a future improved relationship. It’s possible that once she’s forced to face this behavior and no longer allowed to get away with it, she will actually change. I think you could say something like, “I would really like us to have a better relationship but this type of conversation is abusive and unacceptable and I am hanging up the phone or walking away (or whatever is appropriate to the situation).” This allows you to stand firm against this behavior without lowering yourself to her level. On the other hand, I don’t think you have to continue to open yourself up to her critical behavior. I think we could all agree that equal nastiness or ignoring her are not solutions we would be proud of. What is the kind of person you want to be and what is the best outcome for you? Is that kind of person achieved through responding with equal nastiness to your sister-in-law, through ignoring her or through continuing to reach out? (Or none of the above!) You have to continue to behave in a way that you are proud of. It may just help if you have some compassion for her.īeyond that, you are NOT responsible for her behavior, only your own. This is a possible explanation but, as mentioned, not an excuse. Her feelings of inadequacy and guilt may express themselves as nastiness and rudeness. Perhaps there is some reason that your sister-in-law can’t be there for her own mother and she is resentful that you, her daughter-in-law and not her biological daughter, can. There is no excuse for rude behavior, especially under these circumstances. I think my self-respect demands that I distance myself from her and not put up with her rudeness and criticism anymore. On top of that, I’m the one that takes my mother-in-law to all her doctor’s appointments and even to the hairdresser, so if anyone has a right to be resentful it’s me not her! I know it’s painful for my husband (her brother) but I’ve had enough. It does not store any personal data.I have tried and tried to be close to my sister-in-law but she just won’t let me. This raises the question of how the quality of SNF care received by MA beneficiaries may differ from that received by FFS patients. Research has found that beneficiaries move from Medicare Advantage to FFS in higher numbers after a SNF stay. Because SNF patients often have more severe care needs than other Medicare beneficiaries, it is particularly important to understand how SNF characteristics are associated with network formation and MA beneficiaries’ choice of SNFs. 11 There is great variation in quality, payer mix, and cost factors across SNFs, 12– 16 and MA plans may therefore be contracting with lower-quality SNF providers. A recent report by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission documented that FFS payment rates for SNF services were about 23 percent higher than MA payment rates. This study aims to evaluate the differential quality of skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) selected by MA and FFS Medicare enrollees. 10 The paucity of research is mostly due to the unavailability of claims data for MA beneficiaries. 9 Qualitatively, both insurance companies and hospital executives have described controlling costs by limiting access to certain facilities as a key strategy, particularly with the introduction of the Affordable Care Act. A Massachusetts study found that plans with narrow networks excluded hospitals with higher star ratings more frequently than did plans with broader networks 4 and often excluded other prestigious but expensive research institutions. 8 However, we have little understanding of the quality of care provided in MA plan networks and plans’ selection of hospitals and physician providers. 2– 7 At the same time, MA plans must balance level of payment to providers and the quality of care delivered to patients, since higher-quality providers might not be willing to accept low payment rates. Several studies have studied narrow hospital networks and found that insurers have the potential to cut costs by limiting patients’ choice of providers. The Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 permitted this practice because narrow provider networks may reduce the costs of delivering care. While both Medicare Advantage and FFS Medicare cover the same services, most MA plans have a preferred network of care providers. Over the past decade the share of beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Advantage has steadily increased, reaching 31 percent in 2016. These plans are paid for on a capitated basis by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) and have greater flexibility in their offerings than FFS Medicare. The latter is a form of managed care in which patients can choose to enroll in plans offered by private insurance companies. Each year Medicare beneficiaries can choose between two options for health coverage: traditional fee-for-service (FFS) Medicare or Medicare Advantage (MA). 12/21/2023 0 Comments Mickey newbury reverb lpDespite its title, “Dark Fire” has an optimistic bent to it, although the lyrics hint at something terrible in the past. And while Evans is in fine voice here, singing at his most relaxed and gentle, there is the suggestion of a hollowed-out soul, as if Nico’s The Marble Index was a blueprint. Some songs are rendered lush by virtue of expertly-placed reverb and layered guitar overdubs. At times, they recall the understated drama of Leonard Cohen, or even of the God-fearing murder ballads sung by generations of American hill-folk for decades. Songs like “Rotted Spring” and “You Was Mine” are perfect specimens of Evans’ peculiar brand of haunted outback blues. What is a memoir?Ī memoir is a type of nonfiction book that tells a story about the author’s life, focusing on a specific amount of time. Miller reading her testimony will give you full-body chills on your morning commute.Should I write a memoir or an autobiography? Pro tip: Listen to this as an audiobook if you can. If anything, this is a reason for all of us to speak even louder." Amen. In response, Miller wrote, in part: "I want the judge to know that he ignited a tiny fire. But what makes this work a standout is how we witness Miller taking back her power, even as the judge in charge of her case deems the perpetrator's life more potentially impacted by his crime than Miller's, and gives him a light sentence. You’ll hear about Miller’s relationship with her family before and after the trial, her survival of another tragedy in her college days, and the mental health effects she suffered. Chanel Miller (formerly referred to as Emily Doe) revealed her identity right before her book was published in 2019, reclaiming her name and her strength by offering her own account of her sexual assault while unconscious by Brock Turner on the grounds of Stanford University, as well as its devastating aftermath. This is one of the most moving, immersive memoirs you will ever read. Miles, who specializes in the history of African Americans, Native Americans, and women, has written a triumphant and compassionate ode to a modest cotton sack containing the remarkable story of how generations of women survived chattel slavery and.persisted. It leans toward evocation rather than argumentation, and is rather more meditation than monograph." In her intro she writes: "This is not a traditional history. Ashley continues to pass the keepsakes down to future generations of Black women, including her granddaughter Ruth, who embroiders "It be filled with my love always" on the bag.įrom those seven words, historian Tiya Miles weaves the memoir around the journeys of her subjects, with information drawn largely from the archives of the historical period of slavery and onward, starting from the 1850s, but also supplemented by Miles's thoughtful and informed conjecture. The story centers around a small sack containing simple possessions that main character Ashley receives from her enslaved mother, Rose, when she is sold into slavery at age 9. The very best memoirs feature prose that sings and lifts us into worlds that feel intimate and familiar, that we can relate to no matter the geography, ethnicity, or gender. That's because these writers have delved deeply into their hearts and experiences to untangle the riddles of their childhoods and generously share those learnings with us. The very best memoirs will leave you feeling deeply connected with the author, even if your own coming-of-age story was completely different from theirs. Use tongs or a slotted spoon to transfer the chips to a paper towel-lined baking sheet and continue cooking the remaining tortilla chips, adding more oil to the pot as necessary. Once the oil is nice and hot (it should bubble vigorously if you dip the edge of a tortilla into it), add a large handful of tortilla strips, just enough to form a single layer, and cook, turning each one once, until crispy and golden brown, about 1 minute per side. In a large heavy pot over medium-high heat, warm 1/2-inch canola oil. Skip to step 7 if you are using store-bought tortilla chips. In a small bowl, whisk together the sour cream and the remaining 2 Tbsp lime juice. Season the salsa to taste with salt and set aside. Transfer the roasted vegetables to a blender or a food processor and add the cilantro and 3 Tbsp of the lime juice. Roast, stirring now and then, until the vegetables are softened and browned in spots, about 20 minutes. Drizzle the vegetables with 1 Tbsp canola oil and sprinkle with 1/2 tsp salt. Place the tomatoes, jalape?o, and onion on the prepared baking sheet. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. If you don't want or have time to fry your own chips, simply substitute six large handfuls of store-bought tortilla chips. A great example of transforming something that has seemingly gone bad (stale tortilla chips) into something totally memorable, the small victory here is all about figuring out the best way to turn something old into something entirely new. Once that step is done, all you have to do is cook it with the tortilla chips for a few minutes, and you've got a standout meal in under 10 minutes.Ĭhilaquiles are crispy corn tortillas that are softened and flavored with salsa and served warm, often for breakfast with fried eggs on top. This recipe was ridiculously easy and the next time I make it, which very well may be tonight, I'm going to quadruple the salsa recipe so that I can make this dish in a snap. I didn't have the time or energy to fry up all those tortillas, so like she advises in the intro, I threw in six handfuls of store-bought tortilla chips (most of which were stale) instead. Turshen's version took me a little over half an hour to make. I have to say that I'm a huge chilaquiles fan and will order it every time it's offered on a brunch menu. And once I got my hands on a bound copy, I realized that I couldn't wait to cook my way through it, so I did, starting with the Chilaquiles with Roasted Tomato Salsa ( recipe below) for Sunday brunch. □ We're a little perplexed by that one. With a foreward by Ina Garten, and a party hosted by Sofia Coppola (a longtime friend whom Turshen used to trade cooking classes in exchange for wine from her family's winery) to celebrate the launch, it's obvious that Turshen has quite the A-list support crew. They're the best part! As for the martini glass-it feels very 90s, very precarious, and overall not the most efficient way to eat strawberry shortcake. No one puts baby in the corner, but more importantly, nobody should put these biscuits on the side. Our girl Ina suggests serving the strawberries and cream in a martini glass, with the biscuits on the side. Here's where things start going off the rails: plating the dish. The clear standout of the dish, all of the tasters noted that this was a damn good biscuit. Perfectly sweet, super tender and fluffy biscuits. These fancy strawberries are paired with a dollop of lightly sweetened whipped cream and, of course, the biscuits. Her strawberries are tossed in sugar and a splash of Grand Marnier-an orange liqueur that adds a little je ne sais quoi. Ina keeps it pretty classic, with a few fancy flourishes. Read on to see whose recipe took the cake. Who doesn't love a good strawberry shortcake? Fluffy whipped cream, sweet strawberries, and a tender biscuit-what could go wrong? According to our tasters, quite a bit actually! We pit two very different celebs-with two very different shortcake recipes-head to head in a battle of epic proportions. |
